3 Brief History of ToastMasters International (TMI)
1924 Dr. Ralph Smedley’s vision: “To afford practice and training in the art of public speaking and presiding over meetings, and to promote sociability and good fellowship among its members” 1930 – Federation of many clubs, US & Canada Currently, there are over 332,000 members participating in 15,400 clubs in 135 countries Parliamentary meeting structure

2000 November – Club Chartered Club Charter Mentors: Nina Chace & Jim Whitney (deceased 2007) Accomplishments: 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2005 Select Distinguished Club Status 2013, 2008, 2007, 2006 “Talk up Toastmasters” award. 2014, 2007, and 2016 “Beat the Clock” award - added 5 new members in May, June. 2016, 2011 – Smedley Award – added 5 new members in Aug – Sept. Received 2007, 2005, and 2002 Area Humorous Speech Contest award trophies. 2008 – All Seven Officers Trained – Won the Dream Team Award. 2015, 2011, 2010, 2009 – President’s Distinguished Club Status 2011 -“Perfect Ten” (President’s Distinguished Club) Status 2013, 2012 – Select Distinguished Club Status 2016, Distinguished Club Status

5 Toastmasters Mission, Club Mission & Commitment
International Mission Toastmasters International is the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking – vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership, foster human understanding and contribute to the betterment of mankind. It is basic to this mission that Toastmasters International continually expand its worldwide network of clubs, thereby offering ever-greater numbers of people the opportunity to benefit from its programs. Gene Toasters’ Club Mission The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. Toastmasters Commitment Making more than just a personal commitment of self-development; also making a commitment to support others (club members) and Toastmasters organization as a whole.
