2 Taxonomy Taxonomy is the science of classifying and identifying plants. (Taxonomy is really the science of classifying more, but for this class just know plants).

3 Are they necessary? Scientific names are necessary because the same common name is used for different plants in different areas of the world. Also, some plants might be the same but have multiple common names in different areas of the world. ??? Eastern Red Bud, Red Bud, Judas Tree?????

4 E pluribus unum “Out of many, one” Language
Latin is the language used for scientific classification. E pluribus unum “Out of many, one”

5 Karl von Linne Swedish botanist, Karl von Linne, developed the binomial system of naming plants using 2 Latin words to indicate genus and the species. He changed his name to the Latin name of Carolus Linnaeus.

6 The Scientific Name- Binomial Nomenclature
In the scientific name, the FIRST word is the GENUS and the SECOND word is the SPECIES. If there are additional words, they indicate the VARIETY or CULTIVAR (cultivated variety or cv.)

7 Genus Plants in the same genus have similar characteristics.

8 Specie Plants in the same species consistently produce plants of the same types.

9 Scientific Classification
The broadest category of scientific classification is the KINGDOM- either plant or animal. (Plantae or Animalia)

10 Plant Kingdom The broadest category of the plant kingdom is DIVISON or PHYLUM. The four most important divisions of the plant kingdom are: Thallophites, Bryophytes, Pteriophytes and Spermatophytes. Flowering or seed-bearing plants are in the Spermatophyte Division

11 Subdivisions The two subdivisions of Spermatophytes are Gymnosperms and Angiosperms

12 Gymnosperms Gymnosperms: Seed-bearing plants, whose seeds do not form inside fruits but outside the ovum. Examples: Conifers Cycads

13 Angiosperms Angiosperms: distinguished from the gymnosperms by a series of synapomorphies (derived characteristics). These characteristics include flowers, endosperm within the seeds, and the production of fruits that contain the seeds.

16 Assignment Pair up and list the scientific classification of the plant Mr. Dellinger assigns you. Include Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Specie. What is it’s binomial nomenclature? Also include whether it is a gymno- or angio- sperm. Include at least 2 pictures of the plant
