15 What do the Articles of the Constitution do?

16 They are the plans for the new federal government – they set up how the government will be structured.

17 Why is the federal government divided into 3 branches?

18 As a way to prevent one branch from having too much power and
because it creates a system of checks and balances.

19 How does the system of checks and balances work?

20 That way no one branch can overpower any other.
Each branch has the power to check or halt the power of the other branch. That way no one branch can overpower any other.

21 Give an example of the system of checks and balances.

22 Congress makes laws that the President has the right to pass or refuse to pass. The Supreme Court has the right to declare a law unconstitutional. The President is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces but only Congress can declare war.

Congress which is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. It has the power to make laws, to tax people, and to declare war.

It interprets our laws (what they mean) and settles disagreements between individuals and the government.

34 Laws are rules made by the Legislative branch to keep order in the county.

35 What is an amendment and what does ratification mean?

36 An amendment is a change made to the Constitution.
Ratification is when a constitution or change to the constitution is approved.

37 What is a democracy? Why is it important to have a democratic government?

38 Democracy is a form of government in which the power is held by the people.
A democratic government is important because then the citizens will have a voice in what is happening in their country.

39 Why do we have rules and laws?

40 So that people can live together in peace and safety.

41 What are the Bill of Rights?

42 They are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution .

43 Were the Bill of Rights written at the same time as the Constitution, before or after?

45 What is its purpose and goal of the Bill of Rights?

46 It contains our basic rights as citizens of the US
which the federal government cannot interfere with..

47 Why did the writers of the Bill of Rights feel it was important to protect basic freedoms like your right to be free, right to believe what you wish, right to own things?

48 Our Founding Fathers felt that everyone had basic rights they called natural rights.
The Bill or Rights protects these rights to life, liberty, and property.

49 In order for us to have rights as citizens, we must be responsible for our part in keeping our country going. List 3 ways you can be a responsible citizen.
