1 ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING

2 WHAT IS ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING?
Argumentative writing is writing in which a writer makes a claim about topic and then supports it with logic and evidence. ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING DIFFERS FROM PERSUASIVE WRITING BECAUSE PERSUASIVE WRITING USES FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS AS SUPPORTING DETAILS.

3 IMPORTANT TERMS! ARGUMENT COUNTER-ARGUMENT CLAIM TURN-BACK
EVIDENCE AUDIENCE BRIDGE/WARRANT

4 AN ARGUMENT ESSAY IS AT LEAST 5 PARAGRAPHS!!
ORGANIZING YOUR ESSAY FOR AN ARGUMENT ESSAY TO BE EFFECTIVE, YOU MUST ORGANIZE YOUR IDEAS, PROVIDE SOLID SUPPORTING EVIDENCE, AND PRESENT THE INFORMATION CLEARLY. AN ARGUMENT ESSAY IS AT LEAST 5 PARAGRAPHS!! It requires an introductory paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.

5 INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
LEAD: THE LEAD “HOOKS” READERS AND ENCOURAGES THEM TO KEEP READING. INTRODUCE THE ISSUE: BRIEFLY EXPLAIN THE ISSUE AND THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE ARGUMENT. 3. STATE YOUR CLAIM: THIS IS THE THESIS STATEMENT. IT IS A PROMISE TO THE READER THAT THE ESSAY WILL ADDRESS THE ARGUMENT AND PROVE YOUR CLAIM.

6 THESE PARAGRAPHS SUPPORT THE THESIS STATEMENT/CLAIM
BODY PARAGRAPHS 1 & 2 THESE PARAGRAPHS SUPPORT THE THESIS STATEMENT/CLAIM START WITH A TOPIC SENTENCE THAT INCLUDES A REASON PEOPLE SHOULD BE CONVINCED BY THE ARGUMENT. THEN INCLUDE SPECIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE THESIS STATEMENT/CLAIM. USE FACTS, EXAMPLES, AND STATISTICS TO BACK UP THE CLAIM.

7 BODY PARAGRAPHS 1 & 2 3. FOLLOW EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE WITH A BRIDGE TO EXPLAIN HOW THE EVIDENCE SUPPORTS THE CLAIM. 4. CLOSE WITH A CONCLUDING SENTENCE.

8 THIS PARAGRAPH IS WHERE YOU WRITE THE OPPOSING ARGUMENT.
BODY PARAGRAPH 3 THIS PARAGRAPH IS WHERE YOU WRITE THE OPPOSING ARGUMENT. THE OPPOSING ARGUMENT/COUNTER-ARGUMENT PROVES THAT YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THE TOPIC, AND THAT YOU ARE FAIR MINDED. 2. THE TURN BACK IS A RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL ARGUMENT. BE SURE TO REFUTE THE OPPOSING CLAIM.

9 CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH RESTATE YOUR THESIS STATEMENT/CLAIM.
THIS PARAGRAPH IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU MUST CLOSE THE ISSUE BY SHOWING THAT THE TOPIC HAS BEEN COVERED THOROUGHLY. RESTATE YOUR THESIS STATEMENT/CLAIM. 2. THEN, PRESENT ONE OR TWO SENTENCES THAT SUMMARIZE THE REASONS AND EVIDENCE.

10 CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH 3. FINALLY, PROVIDE A BENEFIT THAT WILL RESULT FROM COMPLYING WITH OR HEEDING THE ARGUMENT. OR PROVIDE A CALL TO ACTION TO MOVE THE AUDIENCE INTO WANTING TO MAKE A CHANGE.

11 EVIDENCE AND BRIDGE YOUR EVIDENCE ARE THE FACTS THAT SUPPORT YOUR CLAIM. YOUR EVIDENCE WILL BE IN BODY PARAGRAPHS 1 & 2. THE BRIDGE IS A STATEMENT WHICH EXPLAINS HOW YOUR EVIDENCE SUPPORTS AND CONNECTS TO THE CLAIM. A BRIDGE WILL COME AFTER EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE BODY PARAGRAPHS 1 & 2.

12 WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH YOUR GROUP TO ASSEMBLE AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY!
Start with the Introductory Paragraph. Match each piece of the paragraph to its box on the Introduction Template. Move on to Body Paragraphs 1 & 2. Repeat. Then, move on to the Counter-Argument Paragraph. Repeat. Finally, match each piece of the Concluding Paragraph to its box on the template. You’re done! You’ve put together an argumentative essay! Be ready to share.
