12 Now, for a little math… Without a child, you’d have an extra $1000 in your monthly budget. How many ______ could you buy?* Movie tickets at $8 each Concert tickets at $50 each Fast food lunches at $5 each mp3 players or cell phones at $200 each “Contestants, the final item that we need a price for is…Write down the price on your dry erase board. Audience, you can yell out the answer you think is correct and try to help contestants.” “Audience, please jot down your own answers because you might be our next contestant.” Have contestants turn over boards to reveal answers. Click the green arrow in the lower left-hand corner to get to the next slide, where the answer will be. Don’t let students use their calculators! They should be able to figure these out in their heads (or write it out on the dry erase board)! * NO CALCULATORS!

13 With this extra $1000/month, you could buy…
125 movie tickets ($8 each). 200 fast food lunches ($5 each). 20 concert tickets ($50 each). 5 mp3 players or cell phones ($200 each). Announce the winner of the game. Give this person/team a round of applause. Tell students that they’ve learned a lot about what certain items or services cost to raise a child, and how much it costs as a single parent: ~$2500/month for a single parent to pay for housing, childcare, medical expenses, transporation, etc, which would mean that a parent would need to earn about $17 an hour (or $33,800 per year). Minimum wage will be $7.25 per hour or $14,500. Most teen parent with few job skills and no experience would only be able to earn minimum wage. Ask, “Where would a single teen parent get the additional money that would be needed to support herself/himself and the child?” Answers might include: Get additional training to obtain higher paying job Get money from family members Family or friends provide childcare Get public assistance (food stamps, Medicaid, etc) Have non-custodial parent pay $$ (child support)
