Students will read selections from a variety of genres including: novels, short stories, dramas, biographies, poetry, and non-fiction informational texts. They will then synthesize, analyze, and respond to what they read through classroom discussion, collaborative activities and various writing assignments including argumentative, informative and narrative writing. Contact Information Steven Williams SUPPLIES NEEDED: (2) 1” binders pens/pencils highlighters (blue,green,yellow,pink) notebook paper (4) composition books 3x5 index cards 5 tab dividers Planner novel for free reading (student choice, on level and school appropriate) This course focuses on the Language Arts Florida State Standards, and those stress the importance of students being able to read, understand, summarize, and compare all types of texts as well as respond to each piece effectively verbally and in writing. We will spend time building our oral communication and presentation skills in order to make us confident presenters of information. I will guide students through each step of the writing process. Our goal is to produce thoughtful, polished finished products that reflect writing and grammar skills improvement. Classwork and homework Expectations What is expected of me during class? Be positive: A positive work ethic is expected. Any activities that distract from learning are unacceptable and will not be permitted. Be prepared: Come to class with all materials and ready to learn! NO FOOD,GUM or PHONES IN CLASS. Policies Course syllabus | ……………………………………………………………………………...…………….. Late/make-up work policy The expectation is that you submit all assignments on time. Late work is accepted within 1 week for half credit. Late projects and essays will be accepted for a 10 point penalty per day. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to follow proper procedures to ensure that you receive your work. You will have the amount of time of the absence plus one day to make up the work. Technological issues do not excuse you from completing your work. Please come to my classroom or go to the library as soon as you arrive at school to complete your assignment. Feel free to assignments, I will be happy to print them for you! What do I do when I enter the classroom? Pick up bell ringer binder and any handouts. Check the board. Start on bell work. Where do I find my assignments? The weekly agenda will be posted on the whiteboard. My teacher website will house the weekly assignments, important dates and some handouts. How do I head my paper? Name/number, date and class period should be in the top right hand corner. Assignment title should be centered on the first line. Where do I turn in assignments? Students will be instructed to pass papers to the end of the row or place in the class drawer. Papers must be turned in to the correct place in order for the student to receive credit. What is the policy for writing in ink? All projects/essays must be in blue or black ink or typed. Homework/classwork may be in pencil. What if I do not understand the homework? Be sure and listen in class and take notes if needed. If you run into a problem at home, ask a parent or friend. You may also me. If I do not answer, please come see me first thing in the morning. What if I forgot my homework? *see late work policy! What do I do if I am absent? Check the teacher website for assignments. Any papers will be available either on FOCUS, the teacher website or at school in the dated folder. Missed assignments are due according to county policy (number of days missed +1). Please make arrangements to obtain any missed assessments the FIRST day you are back at school. What resources are there to help me be successful? Teacher website, grading portal, REMIND, DMS webpage, planner, daily & weekly agenda boards I have read Mr. Williams’ syllabus and will adhere to the policies and procedures. Please do not turn in or copy someone else’s work or use another student’s work to complete your own assignments. There may be group projects when information is shared, but those exceptions will be made clear. Plagiarism will result in a zero for all parties involved and parent notification. Multiple occurrences will result in disciplinary action. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. technology We will be utilizing various resources to access the Internet to research, review material, and submit assignments. You must hold yourselves to high expectations when you use these resources. Your time must be spent well. Unless I specifically say that you may have your cell phones out, you must keep them away at all times. If I see your cell phone in class, it will be sent to the office where it may be picked up by a parent.
