Lesson 2-3 Solving Inequalities by Multiplying or Dividing
Obj: The student will be able to 1) Solve one-step inequalities by using multiplication 2) Solve one-step inequalities by using division HWK: p even, 55, 56, 64
2
Properties of Inequality
Multiplication Property of Inequality a) If you multiply both sides of an inequality by the same POSITIVE number you do not change the inequality symbol Arithmetic Algebra 7 < if a < b and c > 0 7 (3) < 12 (3) then ac < bc b) If you multiply both sides of an inequality by the same NEGATIVE number, you must REVERSE the inequality symbol Arithmetic Algebra 8 > if a > b and c < 0 8(-2) < 4(-2) then ac < bc
3
2) Division Property of Inequality a) If you divide both sides of an inequality by the same POSITIVE number you do not change the inequality symbol Arithmetic Algebra 15 < 35 if a < b and c > < 35 5 then 𝑎 𝑐 < 𝑏 𝑐 b) If you divide both sides of an inequality by the same NEGATIVE number, you must REVERSE the inequality symbol Arithmetic Algebra 12 > 4 if a > b and c < 0 12 −2 < 4 −2 then 𝑎 𝑐 < 𝑏 𝑐 ( also true for >, <, ≥, and ≤)
4
Solve each inequality and graph the solution
Ex 1) -50 ≥ 5q Ex 2) g > 27
5
Ex 3) -3 ≤ 𝑥 − Ex 4) 10 ≥ - x

Ex 5) Ryan has a $16 gift card for a health store where a smoothies costs $2.50 with tax. What are the possible numbers of smoothies that Ryan can buy?
