1 Cell Structure & Function

2 Cells All living things are made up of cells.
Cells are the smallest working units of all living things.

3 Definition of Cell A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.

4 Examples of Cells Amoeba Proteus Plant Stem Bacteria Red Blood Cell
Nerve Cell

5 “Typical” Animal Cell Cell membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Mitochondrion
Vacuole

6 “Typical” Plant Cell Cell wall Cell membrane Chloroplasts Nucleus
Vacuole Cytoplasm

7 Cell Parts Organelles

8 Surrounding: Cell Membrane (plant & animal)
Outer membrane of cell that controls movement in and out of the cell Double layer

9 Inside the cell: Nucleus (plants & animals)
Directs cell activities Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane Contains genetic material - DNA

10 Vacuoles (plant & animal)
Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal Contains water solution Help plants maintain shape

11 Cytoplasm (plant & animal)
Jelly-like mixture Surrounded by cell membrane Contains hereditary material Helps the cell stay healthy

12 Surrounding: Cell Wall (plant)
Most commonly found in plant cells & bacteria Supports & protects cells

13 Chloroplast (plant) Contains green chlorophyll “makes plants green”
Makes food for plant cells

14 Inside the cell: Mitochondria (plant & animal)
Produces/Releases energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates Controls level of water and other materials in cell Recycles and decomposes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates

15 Review

16 No Cell wall Flexible cell membrane no chloroplast Smaller vacuoles cell membranes nuclei cytoplasm mitochondria lysosomes Cell wall Rigid cell membrane Have chloroplast Large vacuoles Make their own food

17 Lysosomes (plant &animal)
“Digestion” system of cells. One of its functions is the digestion of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell. Lysosomes are also involved in the breakdown of organelles that have outlived their usefulness.

18 Organelle Simile Book Write similes for the following organelles: nucleus, chromosomes, cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, vesicle, and mitochondrion. 1 PAGE PER ORGANELLE EXAMPLES: A cell membrane is like a guard at the door, it decides what comes in the cell and what goes out of the cell. The nucleolus is like a boss, it gives directs the cell’s activities
