3. Protestant Reformation
This movie is set in England in the 1550’s.
There had been a lot of political and religious conflict in England over the last few generations.
England had been Catholic until 1534, in fact most of Europe was Catholic until 1521, when Martin Luther stated the Protestant Reformation.
From that point on, Protestants and Catholics fought each other legally and physically for political and spiritual control of Europe.

7. Henry VIII He dies, leaving Edward king at nine.
He is a Protestant, raised by Katherine
He has a council of regents.
John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, was the most powerful of these men.

8. Edward VI
Edward was very devoted to the Protestant faith, even berating his older sister for remaining a Catholic, and they were not speaking when he died.
He had been determined to keep England Protestant and not allow it to become Catholic again.

9. John Dudley
With that in mind, Dudley tries to get Edward to marry his first cousin once removed, who is third in line for the throne, and is a protestant.
Her name is Jane Grey.
When it becomes obvious that Edward is very sick and dying, he instead makes her his heir, writing his sisters out of the succession.

10. John Dudley
Dudley cooks up a marriage between Jane and his son, Guilford.
That way he gets his line on the throne and maintains power.
Mary isn’t going to be happy about this.

11. Mary I
In the mean time, Mary has married her first cousin, Philip , the prince of Spain.
She uses his resources to get back into England.
