UnLocking KeyChain Leadership

John 21:15-19 (NLT) 15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?]” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. 16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.
5
17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go.
6
But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”
7
Peter was one of the first people, Jesus called to follow him.
8
Peter denies Jesus THREE TIMES
9
Yet, amazingly, Jesus doesn’t turn his back to Peter – denying, ridiculing or embarrassing, him.
Instead, Jesus invites Peter to enter into the ministry and work of feeding and leading His sheep as a shepherd.
10
The Good Shepherd, is handing the key’s of responsibility (the work of the Kingdom) to Peter and others to care for and lead others.
11
Who Should LEAD?
12
Think about the young people here, are they given shared responsibility in the life of the Church?
13
We need to be a Church of leaders who are willing to take off the keys of their key chains and hand them over.
14
NT Wright writes, “A fresh
challenge. A new commission. Time to learn how to be a shepherd. Time to feed lambs and sheep, to look after them. Not only is this a fresh commission. Not only is Jesus trusting Peter to get back to fruitful work, and to turn his undoubted though wobbly love for Jesus to good account. It is more: Jesus is sharing his own work, His own ministry, with Peter.”
16
People are waiting on the sidelines to be invited to play in the game
17
If our Church or any Church is to move forward in this day and age, we and they must learn to share the work of the kingdom and that means we and they must find ways to share our keys.
