Figure 1 Nek8 Couples Renal Ciliopathies to DNA Damage and Checkpoint Control The Nek8/NPHP9 is important in the function of primary cilia and in blocking pediatric renal degeneration in the disease nephronophthisis (NPHP). These ciliary functions of Nek8 are highlighted in red. Nek8 kinase also controls the DNA damage checkpoint through the direct control of cyclin A kinase activity and indirectly via the ATR-Chk1 pathway, thus limiting DNA damage in response to replication stress.
