2 Listening VS Note-taking
Video: Balancing Act “Studies show that if you take notes, you have a 50 percent chance of remembering the same information than if you didn’t take notes.”

3 How do you know what’s important?
Listen for an organizing pattern. Note whether a handout accompanies lecture materials. Recognize verbal cues. When in doubt, write it down. Consider your learning style preferences. Create a shorthand system that works.

4 Make them into useful notes!
Manipulating. Paraphrasing. Summarizing. Re-writing Re-writing and re-organizing Power point miniatures Outlining Cornell System Mind Maps Add notes from other materials, i.e. textbook, not just lecture!

5 How to: Combat Lecture Styles!
Write out the challenges you might face with that type of lecturer. Write out success strategies for each challenge. What can you do to combat or solve the difficult situations?

1. Why would you want to engage in class? List 2 reasons. -More engaged=more you learn -Class time is the highest priority 2. List 3 ways you can engage (focus) yourself in class. -Show up physically/mentally -Be aware that gab is not a gift -Turn off your phone 3. Why is listening in class called ‘hard-listening?’ What is ‘soft listening?’ -Requires brain power! It requires to assess, analyze, or conclude -You don’t need use brain power; requires accepting, sensitive, and nonjudgemental responses. 4. Is note-taking important? Why? -YES; it helps you remember, transform, and apply the information 5. Do you take notes? If so, how much? Do you think it’s enough?
