An Enlightenment idea developed by Montesquieu that states the power of Government should be split up into at least 3 branches.
The idea behind separation of power is that monarchies were becoming too powerful and would violate human rights.
Legislative: Creates Laws
Judicial: Interprets Laws
Executive: Enforces Laws
Before separation of power all the 3 branches were essentially combined.

An idea that was influenced by separation of power. It is a system that prevents any one of the 3 branches from becoming too powerful.

Senate: One of the two houses of congress consisting of two senators representing each state and tasked with voting on laws for the country.
House of Representatives: The lower house of congress that contains representatives from each state depending on the population of that state in total 435 representatives.
Supreme Court: The highest judicial court in the United States.
Congress: The national legislative body in the country consisting of both the Senate and house of representatives.
Veto: The power of President of the United States to reject a law passed by congress. A method of Checks and Balances.
Presidential Cabinet: Consists of the vice president and 15 heads of governmental bodies that are tasked in providing information and advice to the president.
