1 WATER

2 Water The body MUST have water to function.
People can live more than a month without food but only a few days without water!

3 Functions of Water Water makes up between 50-75% of your body weight.
It is found inside and outside ALL of your cells. Water aids proper digestion, cell growth, and maintenance.

4 Functions of Water All chemical reactions within the body rely on water. Water also lubricates the joints and body cells to help regulate body temperature.

5 Water Intake and Excretion
The body takes the water it needs from the liquids you drink and the foods you eat. About 80% of water intake comes from liquids. These liquids include: water, milk, broth, coffee, tea, fruit juices and other beverages. About 20% of water intake comes from the food you eat. Different foods contain different amounts of water. Example: lettuce contains more water than bread

6 What are some other examples of foods that may contain higher amounts of water???
(hint: think vegetables)

7 Water Intake and Excretion
The body excretes most of the water it uses through the kidneys as urine. It excretes the remaining water through the skin and lungs and in the feces.

8 Water Requirements How to figure out your personal water requirements:
Divide your body weight by 2. The result equals how many ounces of water you should drink each day. Example: a 150 pound person should drink 75 ounces of water a day. (150/2 = 75)

9 Water Requirements Some people need more water than what is recommended for the average person. Someone who is in a coma or suffering from fever or diarrhea has increased water needs. People on high protein diets and those living in hot climates must also increase their water intake.

10 Water Requirements Diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, or the unavailability of drinking water can deplete body fluids. Thirst is the first symptom of water loss. If water is not replaced, dryness of the mouth, weakness, increased pulse rate, flushed skin, and fever can result.

11 Interesting Facts Water is made up of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen. Its chemical formula is H2O. Water has three different states: solid, liquid, and gas. Water is needed to avoid dehydration. What are some other interesting facts???
