1 MT4:The 1920’s (Roaring Twenties)
Learning Target #3 (Essential Question): Explain how the USA changed as a result of mass production, growth of cities, technological advancements/inventions? Explain how these changes effected American society, women and ethnic groups. Assignment: Go over the power point Take notes if you need to Watch all videos Answer the questions at the end

2 Changes The biggest change in the 1920’s was ELECTRICITY
Electricity was invented and soon spread around cities all over the USA EFFECT Factories and homes had a reliable energy source Factories could run 24 hours a day People working more= more money People earned more money Why/How? Worked longer hours Strikes and Unions demanded people receive fair wages Effect People had money to buy things they wanted not just things they needed People had money to go out and do things- see shows, games, fights, etc.

3 Changes in automobiles
Assembly Line Created Each person had one specific job, and in the end the product was finished. 1913 Henry Ford installed the first assembly line He was building a finished car every 93mins (prior /before =12 hours to build one car) Effect Automobiles are affordable for the average person People began to travel Cities grew with traffic Road built to connect USA

4 Change in making products
Mass production Mass production = making a lot of one thing quickly with the use of machines The rapid (very fast) manufacturing (making) of large amounts of identical objects EFFECT More products made =Products are cheaper= more people can afford

5 People start to buy Consumers Credit is born
Prior to the 1920’s being in debt was embarrassing With higher wages people felt confident in paying back their debt People started to buy products (cars, washer machines, radios) on credit called “installment plans”, payment plans. Effect Peoples lives improved People had more products Debt increased With more wages $$$ people began to spend Advertising was created to make people want stuff they didn’t know they needed/wanted New products: Electric irons Vacuums Washing machines Refrigerators Gas stoves pots/pans Cleaning products Mouthwash, makeup, deodorant, perfumes

6 Entertainment Radio Movies Before TVs people had radios Silent movies
Radios provided News Advertisement Soap Operas (novellas) Sports Music Silent movies Movie theaters

7 Who was left out??? Farmers
Farmers had bought lots of land during the war to help produce food The land had been expensive After the war, the amount of food needed went down = so did the profit of the farmers Farmers fell into debt = they lost their homes, and land

8 Questions How did the invention of electricity change peoples lives?
What were the benefits to the increase in wages? How did the assembly line help normal people afford cars? Products were produced faster using what method? List 3 new inventions Why did people begin putting themselves in debt? What were the new forms of entertainment? Which groups of people’s lives changed for the worst?
