2 Edification Edify - οἰκοδομέω, oikodomeō
1) literally – to build something (cf. Luke 6:48, Matthews 21:33) NOTE: This was the common usage of the word. But as we use it, we must keep it in scriptural context. 2) Building in a symbolic sense – Matthew 16:18, 1 Peter 2:5, 1 Corinthians 3:9-10, Ephesians 2:19-21

3 Edification Edify - οἰκοδομέω, oikodomeō
3) Building us up spiritually - “to help improve ability to function in living responsibly and effectively, strengthen, build up, make more able.” (BDAG) Building us up in our faith, moral purity and our knowledge of the word of God This is how we edify one another according to God’s word!

4 Edification Edification is a work of the church (along with worship, evangelism and some benevolence) 1 Corinthians 14:12, 26 Ephesians 4:16, etc.

5 Edification Edification and the church is NOT about:
The place where and when we meet – the church is the members of that body and building them up Catering to and building facilities for social needs (entertainment, meals, whole-life centers, “fellowship halls”, etc.), even for Christians There is NO command, example or inference that the church provides or participates in such activities

6 Edification Edification and the church :
Christians do care for each other and engage in social contact – Acts 2:46, Romans 12:10, cf. 1 Corinthians 11:22, 34 But when we consider coming together as the church, it is about spiritually building us up - Strengthening us in the word and worshipping God. (cf. 1 Cor. 14:4)

7 Edification Edification and God’s word:
God’s word builds us up! Acts 20:32, 1 Peter 2:2 Ephesians 4:11-12, we are given various listed workers (apostles, prophets, elders, preachers, etc.) for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ...

8 Edifying One Another 1 Thessalonians 5:11 2 Corinthians 12:19 Acts 9:31 1 Corinthians 14:12, 26

9 Edifying One Another Involves: Promoting peace – Romans 14:19, 15:2
Promoting growth of the body in knowledge – Ephesians 4:11-12, 16, 1 Timothy 1:4 NOTE: Social activities do NOT strengthen us spiritually (cf. John 6:26-27, 1 Cor. 11:21-22) When we as individuals do our part, it causes the body to grow. (Eph. 4:16)

10 Edifying One Another Involves: Controlling our tongue – Ephesians 4:29 Loving our brethren and being sensitive to their conscience 1 Corinthians 8:1, 10:23 NOTE: Not all things lawful are helpful or edify.

11 Edifying One Another Involves: Proper worship – 1 Corinthians 14:12, 26, Paul was challenging them in their worship to edify one another. May involve discipline – cf. 1 Corinthians 5:4-7, 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

12 As we consider one another, is it our goal to edify one another?
