Measuring Matter Notes
September 21, 2018 Today’s Agenda Journal Measuring Matter Notes Measuring Practice Homework: none Journal #29 How do you measure the volume of liquids? How do you measure volume using a beaker or graduated cylinder? I can… *Identify & measure the volume of a 3-D object.
2
Measuring Matter How do we measure the volume of an object? Cube?
Cylinder? Sphere? Irregular Object?
3
Cube Units of Measure Volume = length x width x height.
You only need to know one side to figure out the volume of a cube. The units of measure for volume are cubic units. Volume is in three-dimensions. You can multiply the sides in any order. Which side you call length, width, or height doesn't matter.
5
Rectangular Prism Multiply the length, the width, and the height.
You can multiply them in any order to get the same different result. The formula for finding the volume of a rectangular prism is the following: Volume = Length * Height * Width, or V = L * H * W.

Measuring Volume We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. Top Image: Bottom Image:
