1 Function, Length, and Time
Digestive System Function, Length, and Time

2 Mouth Function: Length: Time:
Both mechanical and chemical digestion begins in the mouth. Mechanical = Teeth Chemical = saliva (enzymes) Length: 3inches/10 cm Time: On average 30 seconds to chew food thoroughly

3 Esophagus Function: Length: Time:
Function: Muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Food travels down your Esophagus through the process known as Peristalsis. Length: 10 inches Time: 10 seconds

4 Stomach Function: Length: Time
Function: A J-shaped, muscular pouch located in the abdomen where mechanical and some chemical digestion occurs. Length: Around 6 inches plus/16cm plus Time 3 hours for complete mechanical digestion Food Turns and Churns through mechanical digestion Acids and Enzymes attack the churned food through chemical digestion

5 Small Intestine Function: Length Time
Where almost all chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients takes place. Length 20-25ft. (for this class, just put 15ft.) 2-3 cm in diameter Time Upwards of 6 hours. Works together with the Liver and the Pancreas, creating bile and enzymes to break down foods into nutrients.

6 Large Intestine Function: Length Time
Holding tank of the digestive system. Final absorption of water into the bloodstream. Remaining material is readied for elimination as feces/poop. Length 4-5 feet/1.5 meters (put 5 ft. for our class) Time Upwards of 2 days/30-40 hours

7 The Digestive System Total Length Total Time 29 feet 8 inches/9 meters
Up to 49 hours

9 Note Card/String Notes
Materials 6 Index Cards Digestive system Notes String/yarn Markers Directions On next slide

10 Directions Write the NAME, LENGTH, TIME of each part of the digestive system on an individual note card. Draw a colored illustration of the organ/part of the digestive system Length of string between each note card to be: Mouth to Esophagus = 3 inches Esophagus to Stomach = 5 inches Stomach to Small Intestine = 10 inches Sm. Intestine to Lg. Intestine = 15 feet Lg. Intestine to Colon (EXIT) = 5 feet Attach the string to your card at the appropriate distance between each part. Use tape to attach your string to the card.
