I2 Multicast today
vBNS and Abilene will enable for multicast any participants who desire.
Both networks support “native” multicast protocols, as identified by I2 multicast working group.
Abilene now turns on multicast with all new connections (allowing sites to enable it as they are ready).

9. What does “native multicast” mean?
Tunneling (multicast hidden within IP) or flooding don’t scale—use native protocols instead.
Internet2 “native multicast” protocols:
Multicast Source Discovery Protocol advertises multicast sources (“speakers”) among domains
Multiprotocol BGP designates multicast routes, allows for policy control
Protocol-independent multicast forms multicast distribution trees only to nodes who want it
