Five-term, governor of Virginia Delivered the famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” line at the Second Virginia Convention

5 Pre-Write If you were a colonist, would you have been willing to risk your life for freedom from Britain’s rule? Would you be willing to risk your life for your freedom today, as a U.S. citizen in the 21st century? Is there cause you would risk your life for?

As we listen to Henry’s speech, keep track of the different types of appeals he uses (ethos, logos, or pathos).

7 Speech to the Second Virginia Convention
Choose two of the following three questions to answer: Do you think Henry was being accurate when he says, “For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery”? Find one allusion Henry makes in his speech. What effect does the allusion have on his speech? In other words, why do you think he included it? “I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience.” Is this an example of ethos, pathos, or logos? Explain.

4. Watch the music video by Havoc. As you watch, make a list of the different ways Havoc’s video claims the U.S. government oppresses its citizens.

5. What types of rhetorical appeals does Havoc use throughout its video? Give at least two specific examples. 6. Opinion: Do you agree with Havoc’s video? Do you think we are being oppressed by our own government like the colonists were oppressed by Britain? Explain.

10 Persuasive Speeches! If you would like to share your persuasive speech, you can gain a possible 10 extra credit points! In order to receive full points, make sure you: Have an opening statement Include ethos, pathos, and logos appeals Have a closing statement Demonstrate some public speaking ability (try not to be monotone! )
