Aquifer Depletion in the United States
Ogallala aquifer: largest known aquifer. Covers portions of 8 states (174,000 square miles). Irrigates the Great Plains. Provides approximately 30% of the nation’s groundwater for irrigation. Also provides water to 82% of the people living with in the aquifer boundary. Very slow recharge Water table dropping Government subsidies to continue farming deplete the aquifer further Biodiversity threatened in some areas
