Why Statutory Interpretation is Necessary
Role of Parliament is to make laws Role of courts is to apply the law Words in Acts of Parliament might be ambiguous or unclear Sometimes the Act is deliberately drafted in broad terms to allow for flexibility for unseen circumstances or matters which may arise in the future e.g. improved technology Role of court is to find out how Parliament intended the law to apply and to carry out this interpretation

What is used to help Statutory Interpretation
Aids to statutory interpretation: Internal or Intrinsic Aids (things within the statute) External or Extrinsic Aids (things separate from the statute) Rules of Language: Ejusdem generis Expressio unius est exclusio alterius Noscitur a sociis Rules of Interpretation: The Literal Rule The Golden Rule The Mischief Rule The Purposive Approach
