3. Cultural Appropriation
The process by which other cultures adopt customs and knowledge and use them for their own benefit.
"Taking intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else's culture without permission."

4. COMMODIFICATION
The process through which something that previously was not regarded as an object to be bought or sold becomes an object that can be bought, sold, and traded in the world market

5. Culture Appropriation Things to ask:
Is it sacred?
Is it being misrepresented?
Do the creators/gatekeepers consider it disrespectful?
Is it being used to perpetuate a stereotype?
Does it steal from the originators?

6. In an age of globalization, where popular culture diffuses quickly, what do local cultures do to maintain their customs?

7. Local cultures are sustained by maintaining customs.
a practice that a group of people routinely follows.

8. Local Cultures often have two goals:
1. keeping other cultures out.
(ie. create a boundary around itself)
2. keeping their own culture in.
(ie. avoid cultural appropriation)

9. What role does place play in maintaining customs?
By defining a place (a town or a neighborhood) or a space for a short amount of time (an annual festival) as representing a culture and its values, members of a local culture can maintain (or reestablish) its customs and reinforce its beliefs.

Can better separate their culture from others and from popular culture.
Can define their own space.
Daily life my be defined by a shared economic activity.

Sheltered, communal lifestyle – hard
to adapt to culture based on individuality

16. Things not spoken about
They DO pay taxes, they do not pay into or collect Social Security
Many DO NOT work in agriculture – many work in manufacturing or carpentry
High rates of birth defects – marriage outside the immediate community is often encouraged, but not always a possibility

17. Ordnung – “Da Rules”
Acceptable behavior – Certain practices that are so widely accepted they are never discussed.
Esteemed behavior – The way that church leaders and their spouses are expected to behave, but not necessarily the regular church members.
Frowned upon behavior – Things that are discouraged but which are not a test of membership to the church.
Forbidden behavior – Prohibited by the Ordnung. They can, and do, affect membership to the church.
There could be another category that is so clearly wrong, it is not included in the Ordnung. Murder would be a prime example.
Allowing technology into the community would be something the elders would have to decide, if they can justify it within the set of Ordnung for their community.
