2. Grace, Faith and Works
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9

3. Grace Grace is defined as “unmerited favor.”
Is best understood as an undeserved gift.
Grace is when God gives us something, not because we have earned it, but because it pleases God to give it.

4. Faith
Faith is belief and confidence in God and His word (Heb. 11:1, 6).
Grace is God’s part of the equation:
He makes salvation possible and offers it to me.
Faith is my part of the equation:
I believe God and trust Him to save me, as opposed to trusting in myself.

5. Works The traditions, doctrines and commandments of men (Matt. 15:9).
Works done to please men (Matt. 23:5).
Works of the Law of Moses.
Rom. 3:28; Gal. 2:16; 3:10-11
Works of merit or personal righteousness.
Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5
Works of an obedient faith (1 Thess. 1:3).

6. Saving Faith Faith without works is dead, and dead faith cannot save.
“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?”
“Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
“You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.”
James 2:14, 17, 24

7. Saving Faith
“he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” (Matt. 7:21).
“those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord…” (2 Thess. 1:7-8).
“the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” (Heb. 5:8-9).
“have purified your souls in obeying the truth…” (1 Pet. 1:22).

8. Saving Faith
“But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.” Romans 6:17-18

10. The faith that saves has always been a faith that trusts God and responds to whatever requirements He sets forth to receive His promised blessings.
Today, we are saved by God’s grace when our faith moves us to obey the conditions set forth in the gospel.
