Water Chemistry By: Dawn Bodinski
2
The States of Water 3states: solid liquid gas
3
Water Density Most liquids contract (get smaller) when colder.
Water is different. contracts until it reaches 4 ⁰C expands until solid. Solid less dense than liquid ICE FLOATS!
4
Cohesion Water is attracted to other water. cohesion.
5
Cohesive properties Surface tension
name given to the cohesion of water molecules at the surface of a body of water. allows water striders to 'skate' across the top of a pond.
6
Adhesion Water can also be attracted to other materials. adhesion.
7
Adhesive properties Capillary action
like water rising in a straw Plants use this to pull water from the ground From the roots water is drawn through the plant by another force, transpiration.
8
Shape Bent Causes polarity (-) end (+) end
9
Polarity O2 end (-) charge H end (+) charge. HYDROGEN BONDING
The attraction between the + and – ends MAGNETS
10
Thermal Properties Slow to heat up Slow to cool down
takes a lot of energy to raise temperature Makes great coolant Slow to cool down takes a lot of time to release energy Makes great insulator
11
Universal Solvent can & will dissolve MOST everything (Grand Canyon)
12
Universal Solvent How it dissolves Polarity
Disassociates atoms: SEPARATES THEM
