When Diocletian left office in A. D
When Diocletian left office in A.D. 305, conflict broke out again in the empire. Fighting continued until another general named Constantine become emperor in A.D. 312

Constantine’s Rule Constantine issued several orders to reinforce rules of Diocletian in order to improve Rome’s economy (stable military and workforce) Example: Son’s of workers forced to follow fathers’ trade In A.D. 330, Constantine moved capital to Byzantine (Greek city in east) and it is renamed to Constantinople.

V. Constantine’s Rule When Constantine dies and Theodosius is given the large empire to govern Theodosius- empire is too vast of an area and faced threats from inside and out. Rome is divided into separate empires in A.D. 395 Eastern Western Eastern Roman Empire capital at Constantinople Western Roman Empire capital at Rome

VI. Germanic Invaders Germanic tribes migrated from the north, wanted to expand their empire Visigoths seek protection from Rome, Rome agrees but mistreats causing the Visigoths to rebel Germanic tribes invade Gaul and capture Rome Vandals attack Roman lands in Spain and Africa (Vandalism) Germanic tribes had a stronghold on Rome’s empire as well as the government. Roman Emperor Forced out
Germanic leaders held high posts in Rome’s government In A.D. 476, Germanic general Odoacer overthrows Romulus Augustus and gains control of Rome This marks the end of the Western Roman Empire Germanic tribes continued to war amongst themselves The western Roman empire ceased to exist. The Fall of Rome
