Collective Identity Collective Identity is the shared identity of a group of people, because of a common language and culture.

Collective rights are rights that are guaranteed to specific groups in Canadian society based on historical and constitutional reasons.

Visual Essay Assignment
As one of your major assignments you are to produce a visual essay using google presentation over the next two weeks. Your visual essay is due on Tuesday 3 December (share it with your teacher) and must be presented to the class on the 4th and 5th of December.

Directions: Your visual essay will be using video (if possible) and pictures to illustrate the collective rights of one of the three groups covered in chapter 4. These three groups include: First Nations (including the Inuit) Francophones Metis

Your first slide Your first Slide 1: Explain what collective rights are and write a thesis statement that responds to the following question: To what extent has Canada affirmed collective rights? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! See the next slides for the requirements regarding each potential topic

YOUR PRESENTATION MUST ADDRESS THESE QUESTIONS How have past circumstances in Canada’s history have influenced interpretations of Numbered Treaties? The Ways First Nations and government have interpreted Treaties over time. How the Indian Act attempted to define and assimilate First Nations People How First Nations peoples exercise their collective rights and preserve their identities. What are the Challenges and opportunities Francophones face in maintaining their culture and identity (in Quebec and outside of Quebec)? What has been the impact of official bilingualism Where are the largest French speaking populations in Canada? Why isn’t French spoken across our “bilingual” country? The effectiveness of the Charter in fostering Francophone identity. Search terms in Google: Francophone language rights, Quebec language law, FLQ, separatism, assimilation, Manitoba Schools question, Quebec sign law

Metis Slides 2-25/30: Metis Collective Rights. Use the following questions to help guide your presentation. What is the Manitoba Act who was involved? Who is Louis Riel? What are inherent rights and provide an example? What is Scrip what was the positive and negative effects of it? What is the Northwest Resistance? What happen in 1982? Who was Steve Powley what was his story and how does it help define the collective rights of the Metis? Google search terms: Steve Powley, Metis, Louis Riel, Northwest Rebellion, Red River Rebellion.

Use 3 to 5 of your slides to give an update regarding the current state of your group (events of the last 5 years To find good current events information you can use “cbc.ca” or “huffingtonpost.ca” Finally – be willing to spend time researching and, when you find a good/interesting story … TELL IT!
