1 Napoleon October 27 – 28, 2014 Objective: Students will examine the events that led to Napoleon's rise and fall from power through text, written response and activity. “A form of government with a constitution to guide its leaders and citizens and an elected or inherited leader (usually a monarch) who does not have total power and is bound to and must abide by the rules and laws in the constitution” Warm-Up: What does the above definition describe?

2 Absolute Monarchy: the monarch has absolute political power over the state is not effectively restricted by constitutional constraints. Constitutional Monarchy: a form of government in which a monarch is legally restricted within the boundaries of a constitution.

5 Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon worked to restore order and stability to post-revolutionary France. Though he was a dictator, Napoleon gave France the kind of equality that the Revolution had called for. However, Napoleon did not permit freedom of the press nor did he give the French a break from conflict and war.

6 Napoleon Bonaparte Instituted a fair taxation system
Set up the Bank of France. Organized a public school system. Promoted religious freedom. Introduced the Napoleonic Code which made all citizens equal before the law, provided for trial by jury and continues to be the basis for the French legal system today and the model for legal systems across Europe and Latin America.
