1
TSW identify the structure and function of an enzyme
Enzymes TSW identify the structure and function of an enzyme
2
What is an enzyme? PROTEIN that speeds up a chemical reaction
CATALYST: any substance that speeds up a chemical reaction
3
How does an enzyme work? They lower ACTIVATION ENERGY (the energy needed to get a chemical reaction started)
4
What does this look like?
5
Enzyme Action Enzyme binds to 1 or more of the reactants in a reaction
The reactants that bind to the enzyme are called SUBSTRATES The site where the enzyme & substrate bind is the ACTIVE SITE The shape of the ACTIVE SITE is very specific (Lock & Key) to the SUBSTRATE
6
Enzyme Action The ENZYME-SUBSTRATE COMPLEX is formed when the enzyme and substrate connect, this lowers ACTIVATION ENERGY
7
Enzyme Action Product is released from the ENZYME-SUBSTRATE COMPLEX
Key Point: The enzyme is NOT changed at all in this process
8
Enzyme Action 4. Enzyme is now free to react with another SUBSTRATE
