Glossary Negative Pressure – a system when the external pressure is lower than the internal pressure Positive Pressure – A system where the external pressure is higher than the internal pressure.

The Iron Lungs – negative pressure

Task In the iron lung the pressure is reduced by pumping out the air. This means that a vacuum is formed and the patients chest moves up and out making the volume of the thorax bigger and forcing air to enter.

Positive Pressure Breathing

Positive pressure Air is forced into the lungs like into a balloon.
When the lungs are filled the, the air pressure stops and the lungs deflate.
