Thoughts? Note to teacher: this slide is for you to collect the group’s thoughts. You can type / write straight into this whilst in presentation mode through a keyboard or Interactive White Board. Saving the PowerPoint will save the notes taken. Activity: class discussion – thoughts and ideas Note to teacher: encourage the students to think of elements of ‘My Space’ that have been highlighted previously that could be used to collaborate on making and presenting the My Space User Guide. What you are aiming for is a wiki to be used as a collaborative tool and a means to present the information.

Maybe we should investigate wikis a little more closely and also practise using one

Wiki… in plain English http://www.commoncraft.com/video/wikis
Note to teacher: the image hyperlinks to a video in the Common Craft Library. The video provides a sound explanation of what a wiki is. Activity: class discussion – awareness: good, bad and the ugly wiki After watching the video ask the students: Do you have any ideas for what a wiki can be used for? Can you think of an example of a large-scale wiki in use? Note to teacher: Wikipedia is an excellent example of a wiki being used collaboratively in knowledge creation on a global scale. Continue to discuss with the students some of the potential problems with user generated content that is publically available like this. Highlight that issues associated with the open nature of Wikipedia have led to various concerns, such as the quality of writing, the amount of vandalism and the accuracy of information. Also some articles contain unverified or inconsistent information. Since using a wiki will often involve changing work done by others, it is especially important that you have an open discussion about the difference between ‘vandalising’ and making changes to improve the content (editing). Highlight concerns around spelling and grammar; discuss ways to draft content before entering or editing into the live wiki.

In this lesson students are learning about:
Wikis - their features and functions to support working collaboratively in knowledge creation
7
At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
identify the features and functions of a wiki understand the way in which knowledge is being created through ICT demonstrate working collaboratively through the Internet provide examples of wikis being used to collaborate on a global scale

Discussion: Do you have any ideas for what a wiki can be used for?
Can you think of an example of a large-scale wiki in use?

Some points to remember:
Potential problems with user generated content that is publically available like this. For example issues associated with the open nature of Wikipedia have led to various concerns, such as the quality of writing, the amount of vandalism and the accuracy of information. Also some articles contain unverified or inconsistent information. Since using a wiki will often involve changing work done by others, it is especially important that you are aware of the difference between ‘vandalising’ and making changes to improve the content (editing). There are also concerns around spelling and grammar as lots of wiki’s don’t have inbuilt spell checking software. How can you draft content before entering or editing into the live wiki?

Thought wall So what would / should be included in our ‘Wiki Warranty’? To ensure the quality of our wiki we need to provide a ‘Wiki Warranty’. This is also to ensure that anybody creating content for the wiki will have guidelines to stick to. A company provides a warranty for a product they produce and the company signs it, you will also sign and agree to the conditions of the ‘Wiki Warranty’. A company provides a warranty for a product they produce and the company signs it, you will also sign and agree to the conditions of the ‘Wiki Warranty’. So what would / should be included in our ‘Wiki Warranty’? Activity: group work – sharing with whole class via a ‘Thought wall’ display Note to teacher: around the room, on large labels, place titles for the different areas that need to be covered in the ‘Wiki Warranty’ e.g. Purpose of the wiki, Safety, Terms and conditions, Consequences of violating the warranty, other items. Provide the students with different coloured sticky notes (a different colour for each area). Invite students to list their thoughts for items that should be listed under each area on sticky notes. You may have to provide some examples as encouragement but this will depend on your student group. Examples: Purpose of the wiki Practising taking varied points of view on a topic. Responding to / commenting on topics as we study them. Safety Only registered members can see the wiki. All wiki content is subject to teacher approval and/or deletion. The teacher will be notified of any edits to the wiki. Terms and conditions All participants will be respectful in their postings and edits. No inappropriate language, personal insults, discriminatory remarks or comments will be tolerated. Consequences of violating the warranty Any violation of the terms and conditions shall make the violator subject to immediate banning from the wiki. At the teacher’s discretion, a warning may be given in the case of minor infractions. Signatures I agree to the terms and conditions of the class wiki Display the class sticky notes on the ‘Thought wall’ - discuss and agree on the content of the ‘Wiki Warranty’. Important… once the content is agreed upon you will need to type this up and post it in the wiki, and be sure to lock that page! Also, ensure your students sign a copy and keep it on file as an agreement between you. Image by: Shutterstock/CoraMax

We will now add content to a wiki that I have set up for you
We will now add content to a wiki that I have set up for you. In groups you are to take responsibility for one page of the wiki and add content that will inform your peers. Remember you are to use the wiki responsibly and you are answerable for the content you generate…. IMPORTANT note to teacher: you should have already set up the wiki with the appropriate pages to cover various aspects of the ‘My Space’ topic. Ensure you have one page per topic that is locked with a high level overview of the content area and another page that the students can contribute to and edit accordingly. Activity: group – wiki page orientation Introduce the wiki to the whole class and explain that they are going to be assigned to a group which will be responsible for the content creation for a specific area, although you may at some point find it beneficial to encourage everyone to help on any page. As you introduce the wiki, highlight and discuss with the students: ways in which ICT is changing the way knowledge is created how this is impacting on collaborative working how this method could be used on a global scale to communicate / collaborate no restrictions… remind them this is the way Wikipedia content is produced Divide the class into groups of 3-5 students, and then assign each group to topic areas of the ‘My Space User Guide’ wiki. Remind them that the content is to be created in an appropriate tone and manner for the audience – a Year 7 student. Image by: Shutterstock/Andresr + Kheng Guan Toh

Homework You are going to continue to gather information and add it to the wiki. Choose three websites relating to this week’s topic of wikis Using your account on the social bookmarking website, bookmark your chosen websites. Provide a short description of each one and ‘tag’ each site with a number of descriptive key words Note to teacher: explain that they are going to continue to gather information and add it to the social bookmarking website XXX in order to work collaboratively in gathering information for the ‘My Space User Guide’.
