2 Overview Offer students a “range of experiences and interactions with a variety of texts designed to help them develop increasing control over the language processes, to use and respond to language effectively and purposefully, and to understand why language and literacy are so central to their lives.” Atlantic Canada English Language Arts Curriculum Guide: Grade (1997)

3 Overview, cont. Enable students to become “reflective, articulate, literate individuals who use language successfully for learning and communicating in personal and public contexts”. Atlantic Canada English Language Arts Curriculum Guide: Grade (1997)

4 Course Outcomes English Language Arts programs are divided into three strands: Reading and Viewing Writing and Other Ways of Representing Speaking and Listening These are broken down into more specific learning statements known as learning outcomes.

5 Course Content Literary Genres such as:
Poetry Drama Short stories Novels Non-fiction Media It’s not the text, it’s the process!

6 Course Content, cont. Whole Class texts Group texts
Independently read texts Writing Projects (such as Multigenre Papers)

7 Daily Schedule 15 min Reading Workshop
10 min Notebook Writing (response) 50 min Mentor Text Study/Writing Workshop

8 Big Questions How do we read as Readers? How do we read as Writers?
Reading for comprehension and meaning Understanding figurative language Assessing credibility Searching for alternate points of view How do we read as Writers? Understanding text as a construct Evaluating the writers’ “moves” Applying these understandings in our own texts

9 Expectations for Writing Workshop
Students will be expected to write in their Notebooks everyday. Students will have a conference with me every few weeks to review their Notebooks. Process matters!

10 Writing Assignments Students will write many unfinished drafts in their Notebooks. Students will have the opportunity, whenever possible, to choose which pieces get revised and evaluated. Students will be expected to work with their peers in feedback groups.

11 Expectations for Reading Workshop
Students will select their own novels for reading (classroom, home, library). Students will read independently for minutes per day in class and 15 – 20 minutes at home for a total of 3 hours per week. As part of Reading Workshop students will set weekly goals for reading and develop a system for keeping track of their progress.

12 Assessment & Evaluation
80% semester mark 20% final exam mark Semester Mark: 25% Speaking and Listening 35% Reading and Viewing Reading Workshop Text Study Major Project 40% Writing and Representing Writing Workshop Genre Study

13 Assessment vs Evaluation
Assessment is the process of gathering, from a variety of different sources, information that accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the learning outcomes. Evaluation is the process of analyzing, reflecting upon, and summarizing assessment information and making judgments based on that information.

14 Formative vs Summative
Formative Assessment refers to the informal assessments that support the learning cycle by giving students feedback and informing instructional decisions. Summative Assessment is to determine the extent to which learning has occurred for students.

15 Course Success Good attendance!
Proper materials: pens, paper, books, etc. Participation in small group and whole class discussions. Giving respectful opinions backed up by relevant evidence from the text. Lots of reading! Lots of writing! Extra help is available most days.

16 Assignments Assignments are due at the beginning of class.
Work must be the original work of the student or the student will not receive credit for it. Extensions (for valid reasons) need to be arranged prior to the due date of the assignment. Students will have the opportunity to re-do assignments in consultation with me.
