4. Course Outcomes
English Language Arts programs are divided into three strands:
Reading and Viewing
Writing and Other Ways of Representing
Speaking and Listening
These are broken down into more specific learning statements known as learning outcomes.

9. Expectations for Writing Workshop
Students will be expected to write in their Notebooks everyday.
Students will have a conference with me every few weeks to review their Notebooks.
Process matters!

10. Writing Assignments
Students will write many unfinished drafts in their Notebooks.
Students will have the opportunity, whenever possible, to choose which pieces get revised and evaluated.
Students will be expected to work with their peers in feedback groups.

11. Expectations for Reading Workshop
Students will select their own novels for reading (classroom, home, library).
Students will read independently for minutes per day in class and 15 – 20 minutes at home for a total of 3 hours per week.
As part of Reading Workshop students will set weekly goals for reading and develop a system for keeping track of their progress.

13. Assessment vs Evaluation
Assessment is the process of gathering, from a variety of different sources, information that accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the learning outcomes.
Evaluation is the process of analyzing, reflecting upon, and summarizing assessment information and making judgments based on that information.

14. Formative vs Summative
Formative Assessment refers to the informal assessments that support the learning cycle by giving students feedback and informing instructional decisions.
Summative Assessment is to determine the extent to which learning has occurred for students.

15. Course Success Good attendance!
Proper materials: pens, paper, books, etc.
Participation in small group and whole class discussions.
Giving respectful opinions backed up by relevant evidence from the text.
Lots of reading! Lots of writing!
Extra help is available most days.

16. Assignments Assignments are due at the beginning of class.
Work must be the original work of the student or the student will not receive credit for it.
Extensions (for valid reasons) need to be arranged prior to the due date of the assignment.
Students will have the opportunity to re-do assignments in consultation with me.
