Initiating Academic Programmes
The following four Key Questions are to be answered before initiating any new academic programmes? Is there a need in the society? What would be the key difference (USP) from other alternatives? Would it attract talented students?
3
Initiating Academic Programmes
In case one is interested in ‘excellence”, need to answer the following additional question as well. What are my unique/key strengths to launch the programme?

MTech / Certificate Program in
Context MTech / Certificate Program in CS/IT Education
5
Need in the Society 3000+ engineering colleges
Most offering CS/EC/IT programmes Cannot even attract post-graduate qualified candidates as teachers The requirement would be for 100,000+ teachers and if account for attrition (to software industry) it may be atleast 200,000 post-graduate qualified CS/IT/EC teachers
6
Key Contents CS/IT Core CS/IT electives
Data structures, Programming, Architecture CS/IT electives Specialization (typically what the graduate would be expected to teach) (this can also be a market differentiator) Theory and practice of class room education as well as student mentoring Communication skills Exposure to relevant education material and sources Mentored teaching practice and assessment
7
Attracting Talent Clearly a challenge as at present education careers in this area are a poor second choice among the under-graduates Tie-ups with selected colleges for upgrading their skills (to enable this it has to be available in a modular or part-time mode) Concept selling as career option

IIIT Delhi - Institutional Strengths/Weaknesses
New institution – few legacies and vested interests and thus can think differently Need to react to market forces as not completely underwritten by the Govt. Building appropriate stakeholders within the Institution (Young faculty with little teaching experience and recruited on the basis of their research potential – motivating them in a venture with little traditional research focus)
