4 Profile or Objective (or both)
Objective – Your employment goal. What do you want? Profile – Sums up your best assets and strengths, qualifications, and experiences that qualify you for the position in 3-4 statements.

5 education May enter the degree/major in bold Enter anticipated degree date Can also list a minor No need to list high school information Only list a GPA > 3.0 Additional certifications or technical college experiences may be listed in chronological order.

6 Employment or experience
Do not use “I” statements Present Positions = Present tense verbs Past Positions = Past tense verbs Parallel Structure Use Reverse Chronological Order (most recent first) List related jobs, volunteer or leadership experiences List unrelated employment under a section called: ‘Other Experiences’

7 Verbiage Do not become repetitive with your verbs and phrases
Use words/phrases that are similar to the job posting Utilize parallel structure Ex. Prepared weekly field payroll • Handled material purchasing, expediting, and returning • Recorded OSHA regulated documentation • Processed change orders • Maintained hard copies of field documentation Use ONET for verbiage

8 Campus and community involvement
Shows you are an individual who is willing to do much more than just ‘work’. Highlights leadership experiences, involvement List organizations or positions that are relevant to the position you are seeking

10 Clear & bold headings Spell Check Complete Sentences are not required 1-2 pages is acceptable White space is O.K.! (easier to read) Do not allow a job description to be split up on 2 pages Do not include your life story! Only include experiences useful to the position of interest There is not the RIGHT format – it is personal preference Do not use a template! Make the margins wider to fit all needed information on a page Either use/don’t use periods at the end of sentences (consistency) Can list positions in bold font to help them stand out. All bullet points & dates should line up correctly Use bullet points

Utilize contacts who work within your field of interest

12 Cover letters Use standard letter format
Paragraph 1: Explain who you are ,why you are writing and interested in the position (show passion and enthusiasm!)

13 Cover letters Paragraph 2: Sell yourself! Refer to your resume, but don’t repeat it. Write why you are perfect for this position. Bullet points can be used.

14 Cover letters Paragraph 3: Your contact information, how the employer can reach you, and a Thank you.
