Greece was NOT a unified empire. Each city (known as a city state) was independent.
Mountainous terrain helped and hindered the development of individual city states.

Trade important as was the spread of the Greek culture
Shift from barter (trade) economy to money economy (coins)
Depended on trade to access resources not naturally found in Greece.
