Who were they? Explorers asked by Thomas Jefferson to map out the new territory from the Louisiana Purchase. Meriwether Lewis was T.J.’s secretary, and William Clark was Lewis’s friend William Clark was a lieutenant in the U.S. army and trained men for the trip
