4 The Online Self “The construction of online identities or persona is now an essential activity for the academic both from the perspective of university value and individual/career value” Just as our resources and social lives have gone online, so too have our academic selves. Our academic selves increasingly come on display through our departmental websites, through social media, and online scholarly profiles. With so many options how do we choose? 5 The Online Self Just as our resources and social lives have gone online, so too have our academic selves. Our academic selves increasingly come on display through our departmental websites, through social media, and online scholarly profiles. With so many options how do we choose?

6 ResearchGate Popular in the sciences, with over 12 million scholars currently signed up Boasts100 million items uploaded (many of which have been posted illegally) Under pressure from publishers and professional organizations over the legality of sharing PDFs

7 Academia.edu More popular in the Humanities, same issues as ResearchGate Switched to a premium model in the Spring 2017 leading to a large exodus of scholars from the service Search functions and metrics no longer work without paying

Association with Utah State University, but completely personalized and stays in your control if you move on to another institution Everything is vetted for copyright prior to upload Free service provided by the Library

14 Google Scholar Google Scholar is the premier search engine for the discovery of academic articles It also provides metrics such as number of citations, h-index, and i10-index to show your impact for promotion and tenure You will need to create a ”profile” and claim your work

15 ORCiDs ORCiD IDs are unique identifiers that allow you to claim your research as your own Many publications are requiring ORCiD IDs in order to publish with them
