1 Engage & Survive To enable delegates to understand the importance of meaningful safety engagements as part of our collaborative efforts towards sustainable world class safety performance. To understand some simple, sustainable tools and techniques required to encourage better and more meaningful interactions and engagement from a safety perspective. To feel more confident about engaging with colleagues and to shift attitudes towards a WANT TO and being PROUD TO conduct meaningful engagements rather than feeling like they HAVE TO.

3 ABC Analysis We need to properly ABC Analyse the specific “Wrong” behaviours and see just how the A’s and C’s line up. Including how we “check, properly check it” if at all. Once we’ve established that, we can then Re-Design the A’s and then Re-Align the C’s to create a new “Good” behaviour We didn’t properly pursue this. I assumed that we would have time to go through this process with Carl and Steve right at the end. We would have identified many more key points for the 5 specific concerns of the drivers.

6 MISTAKES Rule based – poor communication Knowledge based – lack of training

7 Slips & Lapses of Concentration
Too tired Distractions Pressures of work

8 Violations Wilfully doing the wrong thing even though they know The right thing to do

10 Disaster occurs when all holes are aligned at the same time

11 Let’s all make sure that as many holes as possible are filled in

12 BEHAVIOUR Deletions Distortions Generalisations VALUES Attitudes

15 Cognition Model - ABCD Method
Antecedent Belief Consequence Dispute Or a different way of looking at the same model is that. EVENT happens and leads to an internal BELIEF that may or may not be true, it’s just what we BELIEVE, and then that leads to a specific CONSEQUENCE that can either make us feel GOOD or NOT SO GOOD. The trick is to identify any negative thought patterns and then DISPUTE that thought and replace it with something POSITIVE instead. Let me show you some examples….. (Ellis, 1991)

16 Son not coming home for Christmas
Antecedent or Event He doesn’t like staying with us! Belief or Thoughts Disappointed and sad 😟 Consequence or Feeling This is a typical event or activator that has lead to a negative thought pattern and a feeling of helplessness.

17 Lots of reports to write
OMG! How will I possibly cope Fed Up 🙁 Learned Helplessness Here’s another example…

18 An important presentation
I’ll never be able to do that Demoralised & unhappy 😔 Disputation And again….so let’s see if we can interupt these thoughts and DISPUTE it to lead to a much more positive feeling or EMOTION

19 That’s great as he’s having fun Happy and proud 😊
Son not coming home That’s great as he’s having fun Happy and proud 😊 Learned Optimism Here is the same event….that leads to a totally different feeling. That is much more useful for ourselves AND those around us

20 Lots of reports to write Feeling or Emotion?😊
That’s great because….? Feeling or Emotion?😊 So. Let’s see what we can do here?

21 An important presentation That’s great…. Feeling or Emotion?😊😊
And how about this one?

25 Goal Setting Outcome Goals Performance Goals Process Goals Time
“The Dream!” Way in the future Not specific In the near future Weeks or months In the moment What can be done right now A daily habit Becomes the norm Focus Focus is on the achievement or objective “to be the best” Just a stepping stone A checkpoint Must support or underpin our Outcome Goal The here and NOW What you or your people can do every day Becomes a habit or a ritual Control Little or no actual control Many other factors Wide parameters More control over this Could be a SMART target Total control over this Nothing can get in the way of this Initially a Conscious choice that then becomes Sub-conscious activity Goal Setting

26 Training – The 10-20-70 Rule 10% Course 20% Any Context
(within 1st week) 70% Engagement
