1 Meaningful 3d Integration
Linda Kurtz-Sope Creek Elementary a Cobb County School *Want to play along? Create a account!

2 HOW THIS GOES DOWN Introducing 3D printing to students
Meaningful 3D vs. toy making Establishing processes and procedures Nuts and bolts of 3D printers Student friendly CAD and management Integrating 3D printing design challenges to curriculum Resources for 3D printing-linking to curriculum Example of student work/challenges How to differentiate a challenge & make it real world **WANT TO PLAY ALONG? CREATE A TINKERCAD ACCOUNT

3 Introducing 3D printing
3D printing for creating things that help us solve a problem (EDP) Example 1: Prosthetics- Dad and an Xbox Limbitless solutions Example 2: Helping Animals Example 3: Solving problems *Must be original student work that is a solution to an EDC or solves a problem

4 Meaningful vs. chicken bunny
What is meaningful: Is a student original design Has a purpose Solves a problem What is not meaningful:

5 Processes and procedures
Establishing school wide processes and procedures makes it easy to say “no” Students can only work on their own original designs School controlled usernames and passwords Only print student created designs as a solution to an EDC All work is done at school For student work Create a criteria for every job Beginner work must have solid base and supports (pyramid) Students check their own Students have 2 other students check their work Submit to teacher for final check

6 3D printers nuts and bolts
Makerbot: Makerbot Replicator Requires software download STL files, download, upload, export Settings for a beginner: Rafts Supports Infill

7 From Tinkercad to Makerbot

8 Settings for beginners

9 Print settings:

10 Supplies

11 Student friendly elementary cad *NO downloads necessary
Computer Aided Designs: Take 2D models to converts to 3D designs Options: Webased, downloads, apps WEBASED: 1: Tinkercad Downloads-YES 6+ 2: Leopoly Downloads-NO 6+ 3: BlocksCAD Downloads-NO 13+

13 CAD programs:

14 What I use with kids that works:
TINKERCAD-WEB VERSION WHAT I LIKE: SIMPLE INTERFACE STUDENTS CAN SAVE DESIGNS ON WEB/NAME CLEAR PARAMETERS OF MEASUREMENT TEACHER generates and access code for students Students can share online, work in groups, or share with the teacher THEN CREATE A DESIGN THAT MEETS THE CRITERIA

15 How to set up Tinkercad for students 12 AND UNDER (no email)
Set up a teacher Tinkercad account Click TEACH then generate a CODE to share with your students

16 Only Tinkercad How to Learn tab then Starters

17 Tinkercad how to Go to LESSONS Show more lessons
Then assign these 6 lessons in order *Die on the work plane for 4th and 5th grades only

18 WORKPLANE AND MATH CONNTECTION

19 Workplane and math connection

20 Math connections Examples: Perimeter:
Create with a perimeter no greater than…..Maximum length, Maximum width Area: No greater than _____sq mm *Between _____sq mm and _____sq mm Volume: Total volume no more than… Total volume (3 graduated stages) Higher order: Example: Create a structure between 900 and 1,000 cubic mm What is the maximum volume of your builds, minimum volume

21 Resources for 3D Curriculum links
Thingiverse for Education Pinterest Kathy Schrock: printing.html
