MONDAY DO NOW Assign Yourself – Homework Packet Due THU 10/20 Biorganizer – Cornell Notes page 50 Title: TYPES OF MUTATIONS DO NOW: TRANSLATION DO NOW (5 min)
2
Mutations
3
Why are proteins so important?
Proteins determine what a person’s traits (physical features) will be.
4
Why do people have different traits?
People have different traits (like different eye color and hair color) because they have different nucleotide sequences. Different nucleotide sequences result in different types of proteins, which results in different physical traits.
5
What is a Mutation? the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a different form that may be transmitted to succeeding generations
6
What are the different types of Mutations?
Insertion Deletion Frameshift Substitution Silent
7
Processing Piece #1 What kind of mutation do you think this is? Why?
Original DNA: TCACCG Mutation : TCAACCG
8
Insertion Mutation An insertion mutation is the addition of one or more nucleotide base pairs into a DNA sequence.
9
Processing Piece #2 What kind of mutation do you think this is?
Original DNA: TCACCG Mutation : TCCCG
10
Deletion Mutation A deletion is a mutation in which part of chromosome or a sequence of DNA is missing. Deletion is the loss of genetic material.
11
Frameshift Mutation A Frameshift mutation will cause all of the following protein chains to be built incorrectly. EX: Deletion, Insertion
12
Processing Piece #3 What kind of mutation do you think this is?
Original DNA: TCACCG Mutation : TCGCCG
13
Substitution Mutation
A substitution (or Point Mutation) is a type of mutation that causes the replacement of a single base nucleotide with another nucleotide.
14
Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle Cell Disease is a hereditary disorder characterized by abnormality in the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin molecule in red blood cells.
15
Silent Mutations Silent mutation are DNA mutation that do not significantly alter the organism.
16
PRACTICE Original DNA Sequence: T A C A C C T T A
Mutated DNA Sequence: T A C A T C T T A Circle the change in the Mutated DNA. What’s the mRNA sequence for the mutated DNA? Amino acid sequence for the Mutated DNA? Will there likely be effects? What kind of mutation is this?
