George H.W. Bush is President!
George Bush was elected in 1988. He is a Republican. He was president for 4 years. He continued to push for changes in the Soviet Union.

Fall of the Berlin Wall In 1989, East Germany was on the verge of collapse. On November 9th, 1989 private citizens began to demolish the wall without opposition from East German authorities. In 1990, East and West Germany reunited for the first time since 1949.

Persian Gulf War In 1990, Saddam Hussein (leader of Iraq) invaded neighboring Kuwait. The United Nations condemned the invasion. People worried that Iraq may invade other countries around the world.

Persian Gulf War The United States led a group of 30 countries in an effort to kick Iraq out of Kuwait. The attack was a success and Iraq left Kuwait. However, Saddam Hussein still remained in power as the president of Iraq.

Women during the Gulf War
35,000 U.S. women served in the Persian Gulf War in noncombat roles. This created a debate about the role of women in the military. In 1991, Congress voted to allow women to serve as combat pilots.

Bill Clinton is President!
Bill Clinton became president in 1992. He is a democrat. He served for 8 years as president.

President Clinton and NAFTA
North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Opened trade between Canada, U.S. and Mexico. This meant removing trade barriers like tariffs. People worried that this would cost American workers their jobs.

Health Care President Clinton tried to develop a plan to provide health care to all Americans. This plan had much opposition and failed to gain support and acceptance.

President Clinton Scandal ooops!!
President Clinton’s conduct became public after a relationship with a White House intern was exposed. He was impeached, but found innocent.
