1 Tuesday 2/6/18 Notebook Entry: There is a brand new reality TV show called “Copper Capers” that challenges people to find copper! The goal is to be the first to discover a new deposit of copper. The prize is $10 million to the person who finds the largest deposit of copper. You take on the challenge and use your knowledge of where copper forms to go in search of copper to win the big $$$$ prize. Question: Where in the world would you first go look first? Why would you go look here? Be sure to included the scientific reason why this place would be a likely spot to form copper.

2 Minerals Form in 2 MAIN Ways
Crystallize from materials dissolved in water Evaporation Hot water solutions

3 What is a solution? A mixture (or compound) in which one thing is dissolved in another.

4 What is a compound? 2 or more elements chemically joined together
The individual elements have joined and turned into something else. Essential for Life!

5 Minerals Form in 2 MAIN Ways
Crystallize as magma and lava cool Magma cools slowly forming large crystals Lava cools quickly forming small crystals

6 What are the similarities between the maps?

7 Porphyry Copper Deposits
The subduction of oceanic crust results in making hot water solutions that eventually harden near the surface forming mineral deposits like copper.

8 Research Question: Why is copper only found in certain parts of the world?
What is your answer to this question? (Claim?) Rubric Statement: My claim correctly identifies the relationship between the formation of copper and where it is located. The claim should be no longer than two sentences. Don’t include evidence or reasoning.

9 Wednesday 2/7/18 Notebook Entry: What are two strategies you have learned in English/Reading that will help you when you are writing in Science.

10 How does Copper form? Work in your group to fill in the blanks of the flow chart
Tectonic plates converge or collide together ? The plate sinking down into the mantle begins to melt. Magma that remains deep below Earth’s surface slowly cools over thousands of years.

11 What RELEVANT evidence do you have?
Closely connected to your claim Supports your claim – gives “proof” Makes your argument stronger Make sure your statements are detailed and specific. You must include examples from both maps Multiple pieces of evidence Rubric Statement: I use relevant, scientific evidence to support my claim and I clearly describe the evidence.

12 Monday 2/12/18 Fill out your assignment notebook for the week.
No Notebook Entry but you still need your spiral notebook.

13 Scientific Reasoning – What connects it all together?
Rubric Statement: My reasoning refers to the evidence and links it to the claim. I include a scientific principle to explain how the evidence links to the claim. Clearly state how the different pieces of evidence are connected/related to each other. Clearly explain the scientific knowledge that shows how the evidence is connected to the claim.

14 How does Copper form? Use the flow chart in your notebook to help you with your reasoning.
Tectonic plates converge or collide together ? The plate sinking down into the mantle begins to melt. Magma that remains deep below Earth’s surface slowly cools over thousands of years.

15 Review and Write your Final Paragraph
Check each box of CER to see if it meets the proficient row of the grading rubric On a piece of lined paper write a final paragraph that answers the research question. Take what you have written in the boxes and put it into a paragraph. I would encourage you to highlight the information in your boxes to identify topic, main ideas and supporting details. You may realize you need to add a sentence or two to have these parts. You will have to add transition words and phrases When you finish, staple your final paragraph to the rough draft page and turn in. IF YOU DO NOT FINISH IN CLASS IT IS HOMEWORK DUE TOMORROW!
