Important leaders: Ignatius – founded new religious orders
Pope Paul III and Paul IV- Reformed and renewed the church for within.

Ignatius of Loyola Injured in a war 1521 causing him to reflect on religion. Wrote a book Spiritual Exercises day-by-day plan meditation prayer and study. Created society of Jesus members known as Jesuits.

Jesuits Founded schools throughout Europe.
Convert non-Christians to Catholics. Stop the spread of Protestantism.

Reforming Popes Paul III 1534-1549
Directed council of cardinals to investigate indulgence selling and other abuses. Approved Jesuit order. Called for the Council of Trent.

Council of Trent Church’s interpretation of the Bible is final! Christians needed faith and good works for salvation. Faith alone not enough. Bible and Church tradition authorities for guiding Christian life Indulgences valid expressions of faith, false selling banned.

Paul IV Continued Paul III’s work
1559 drew up a list of books considered dangerous to Catholic faith. Index of forbidden books. Gave order to gather forbidden books and burn them. Venice alone burned 10,000 books in one day.

Legacy Protestant churches flourished and new denominations developed.
Catholic Church became more unified (Council of Trent started it off) Emphasis on education in promoting beliefs founding new schools. Women no change still limited by both. Catholic church decline gave rise to monarchs and state’s power. Questioning beliefs will lead to the Enlightenment!
