♦ CLOTHES OF CHURCHMAN ♦ CLOTHING OF SOLDIERS

2 MEN’S FASHION ● Man in the Middle Ages wore a tunic as long as the knees tied by a belt or a rope. Hanging from the belt there was a “scarsella”, a cloth bag. In the thirteenth century, men began wearing shirts and trousers and the use of buttons was also introduced.

3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEN’S CLOTHES
POOR MEN : they usually wore a work dress until it became old and worn out, sometimes they wore a party dress that they never changed it in their life. Anyway the party dress wasn’t so beautiful as the dress of a rich man because clothes decorations were very expensive and poor men couldn’t afford them. CHURCHMEN : priests usually wore a black or white or brown GOWN and a belt USUALLY A rope, the gown usually had a hood. The cardinals wore more precious dresses because their social role was more important than the other ecclesiastical men. RICH MEN : They wore dresses likes the ones of the other social classes, the differences were only in the type of material used to make dresses, in fact their dresses were made of linen, wool and oriental fabrics.

4 WOMEN’S FASHION Clothes for women were characterized by great variety of fabrics and rich ornaments. They, like men, wore socks with garters but they did not wear a belt for trousers, and they generally wore high and possibly very tight shoes.

5 DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOMEN’S CLOTHES
RICH WOMEN: The clothes were made of a long under wear with long and narrow sleeves and a large overcoat with sleeves to the elbow, The fabrics were always valuable and often embellished with embroidery. The married women wore a veil and their hairstyles were simple. Unmarried women used to tie their hair both in long plaits or elaborate buns .they might wear it loose.

6 SOLDIERS and KNIGHTS Below about 20 kg of armour, the knights wore a shirt and trousers. The Crusaders wore a tunic and a white cloak with a red cross if the were Templar; a white tunic with a black cross if they were Teutonic or a black tunic with a white cross if they were Hospitallers.
