1 Four Levels of Word Knowledge
I have heard this word before, but I don’t know the meaning. I think I know what this word means. I know one meaning for this word, and I can use it in a sentence. (Prove it.) I know several meanings or other things about this word and can use it in oral discussions. (Prove it.)

Six Steps for Vocabulary Instruction Protocol (Robert Marzano, Building Background Knowledge) Provide a description, explanation, or example of the new term. Ask students to restate the description, explanation, or example in their own words. Ask students to construct a picture, symbol, or graphic representing the term or phrase. Engage students in activities that help them add to their knowledge of the terms in their notebooks. Periodically, ask students to discuss the terms with one another. Involve students periodically in games that allow them to play with the terms. Note: Steps 4 – 6 do not necessarily need to be in sequence
