Foldables Make the following Foldable to help you stay focused and better understand scientists when you are reading the chapter.
23
Foldables Draw a mark at the midpoint of a sheet of paper along the side edge. Then fold the top and bottom edges in to touch the midpoint.
24
Fold in half from side to side.
Foldables Fold in half from side to side.
25
Foldables Turn the paper vertically. Open and cut along the inside fold lines to from four tabs.
26
Foldables Label each tab.
27
Foldables Classify As you read the chapter, list the characteristics of the four major divisions of scientists under each tab.

Scientists use tools to measure.
Reviewing Main Ideas 1 What is Science? Science is a process that can be used to solve problems or answer questions. Communication is an important part of all aspects of science. Scientists use tools to measure. Technology is the application of science to make tools and products you use each day. Computers are a valuable technological tool.
31
Reviewing Main Ideas 2 Doing Science No one scientific method is used to solve all problems. Organization and careful planning are important when trying to solve any problem. Scientific questions can be answered by descriptive research or experimental research. Models save time and money by testing ideas that are too difficult to build or carry out. Models cannot completely replace experiments.
32
Reviewing Main Ideas 2 Doing Science A hypothesis is an idea that can be tested. Sometimes experiments don’t support the original hypothesis, and a new hypothesis must be formed. In a well-planned experiment, there is a control and only one variable is changed at a time. All other factors are kept constant.
33
Science and Technology
Reviewing Main Ideas 3 Science and Technology Science is part of everyone’s life. New discoveries lead to new technology and products. Science continues to challenge old knowledge and ways of doing things. Old ideas are kept until new discoveries prove them wrong.
34
Science and Technology
Reviewing Main Ideas 3 Science and Technology People of all races, ages, sexes, cultures, and professions practice science. Modern communication assures that scientific information is spread around the world.

Question 1 Answer _______ are rules that describe a pattern in nature.
Chapter Review Question 1 _______ are rules that describe a pattern in nature. Answer The answer is laws. Scientists use theories and laws to predict what will occur in investigations. AID S1.2b
36
Chapter Review Question 2 _______ is the application of science to make products or tools that people can use. Answer The answer is technology. Computers are an example of technology. IS 3.2
37
Chapter Review Question 3 The system of measurements used in this table is called the _______. AID S3.1a
38
Chapter Review Answer The answer is International System of Units, or SI. Scientists around the world use this system, allowing them to understand each other’s research and compare results.
39
Chapter Review Question 4 This system uses certain metric units based on units of _______. A. one B. five C. ten D. twenty AID S3.1a
40
Chapter Review Answer The answer is C. Using units of ten make multiplication and division easy to do.
41
Question 5 Which describes a control?
Chapter Review Question 5 Which describes a control? a sample that is treated like the other experimental groups except that the independent variable is not applied to it B. the factor be measured C. the variable that is being changed D. none of the above AID S2.2b
42
Chapter Review Answer The answer is A. Experiments would not be valid without the use of a control.
43
Question 1 Which best describes this illustration? A. data table
Standardized Test Practice Question 1 Which best describes this illustration? A. data table B. example of a journal entry C. hypothesis D. problem solving steps using scientific methods AID S1.1c
44
Standardized Test Practice
Answer The answer is D. Scientific methods are ways or steps to follow to try to solve problems.
45
Question 2 Which is a way scientists avoid bias?
Standardized Test Practice Question 2 Which is a way scientists avoid bias? A. jump to conclusions B. give only partial information to match the results you want C. use numerical measurements for all data D. use selected samples AID S1.1c
46
Standardized Test Practice
Answer The answer is C. Good investigations avoid bias. Using careful numerical measurements for all data is a way to avoid bias.
47
Question 3 Which is NOT a common way to organize data? A. chart
Standardized Test Practice Question 3 Which is NOT a common way to organize data? A. chart B. graph C. on a note card D. table AID S3.1a
48
Standardized Test Practice
Answer The answer is C. Although you can keep track of processes, observations, and data on note cards, it is not a common way to organize all the information you gather.
49
Question 4 Which is a science skill? A. classifying B. interpreting
Standardized Test Practice Question 4 Which is a science skill? A. classifying B. interpreting C. observing D. all of the above AID S2.2d
50
Standardized Test Practice
Answer The answer is D. The more you practice these skills, the better you will become at using them.
51
Question 5 This is an example of a _______. A. chart B. graph
Standardized Test Practice Question 5 This is an example of a _______. A. chart B. graph C. science journal D. table AID S3.1a
52
Standardized Test Practice
Answer The answer is D. A well- planned investigation includes ways to record results and observations accurately. Data tables are one way to do this.
