6. Theoretical Imperatives
Enhancing student support and development
Theory allows us to move beyond empirical descriptions of behaviour, such as student success or the lack thereof, to an attempt to understand why those behaviour occur. The point of theory is to explain how those behaviours arise so that when something goes awry, that is when students do not succeed; you have a strategy, a way of thinking about what in turn you do to improve success.

All institutions have indicated that issues of strategy are being addressed at the highest levels
RU – integrated approach (Require commitment across the services, especially the academics)
SU – Clearly coordinated system that extends to resident and non-resident students
However, each institution needs a student support and development strategy. This should make provision for linkages/integration with other initiatives ensuring a holistic approach to students academic experience
