1 Welcome! April 10th, 2016 Tuesday
Do Now Find your seats. Write the date at the top of a new page in your journal. Once the bell rings, begin the freewrite. Prompt: Try to describe yourself in third person. How might a narrator describe you if you were a character in a story?

2 Writing Character Descriptions
Though many writers claim that physical descriptions are the weakest form of characterizations… Today, we’re going see how authors often break that rule.  First, look at the handout titled “Sample Character Descriptions.” Take a few minutes to read through them (there’s a front and back!). Choose one description that you liked/found the most powerful/thought was interesting and do the following: Write down the first sentence of the description Why did you choose this description? What does the description tell you about the character’s personality?

3 Writing Character Descriptions
Next, we’re going to read through blogger Eva Langston’s 10 Tips for Writing Character Descriptions. As we read, put a star next to any tips that you think are good advice. Put a question mark next to any tips you disagree with or aren’t sure you understand. (Try to mark at least one of each.)

4 Writing Character Descriptions
Choose at least two of the tips that you think you can incorporate into a piece. Once you’ve chosen, do the following: 4. Write down the two tips you’re going to try to use 5. Tell me how you’re planning on using each tip (For example, “My piece is supposed to be funny so I’m going to describe a dumb character in an insulting/funny way,” or “I want to use figurative language to describe my character, so I’m going to use a metaphor to compare her eyes to rain puddles on concrete”)

5 Writing Character Descriptions
Now that you’ve figured out who you’re going to describe and how you’re going to do it, it’s time to actually write your rough draft. Your piece should be at least 300 words. I should see that you attempted both tips for writing character descriptions. Remember #10. You entire piece doesn’t have to focus on your character’s description. Just make sure it’s in there somewhere. 
