Properties and Changes of Matter
2
A. Physical Properties Physical Properties
Characteristic you can observe without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance. You can detect many of these properties with your senses. EX: how it looks, smells, sounds, or tastes
3
A. Physical Properties Physical Properties States of matter
Solid, liquid or gas EX: Water Solid – ice Liquid – water Gas – water particles in air
4
A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Dependent Properties
Mass – how much matter it contains Volume – amount of space it occupies Weight – mass x gravity
5
A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Independent Properties
Density – amount of mass in a given volume D=m/v Solubility – number of grams of something that will dissolve in another at a certain temperature.
6
A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Independent Properties
Melting/boiling points The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid – melting point. The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas – boiling point.
7
A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Independent Properties
State of matter Color Ability to attract a magnet Magnetic – pulls iron towards itself. Some materials can be made into magnets.
8
B. Chemical Properties A chemical property is a characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance. Ability of a substance to undergo a change that alters its identity. Match, food baking
