Quote One Type of Hook
2
What is a Quote? A quote occurd when a writer uses the exact words of someone else and cites the speaker. Using the quote of someone famous can be an effective hook. The reader may relate to the speaker which will cause an immediate connection. A quote can also be effective purely because of the words in the quote. If they are inspiring, odd, or dramatic, they may strike a chord with the reader drawing them into the essay. When using a quote, be sure to enclose the exact words in quotation marks. In addition, the speaker of the quote must be identified.

A Sample “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” – Bill Cosby This quote surely rings true with me. In trying to please my family and make them proud of me, I mistakenly chose my future career. I wanted their approval, and being one of the first members of my family to go college, I was determined to succeed and become something prestigious. I was going to be a pharmacist. Choosing the career of pharmacy was a huge mistake since I am not skilled in math, am rather squeamish when it comes to medical issues, and have skills that are better geared to the arts. Another Sample Dolly Parton once said, “If you want a rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain.” How true this statement is for me! I have had many hard times in my life. Storm clouds gathered around me often on my road to academic and professional success. Some times of rain in my life that helped shape me into the successful person that I am today were working multiple jobs to pay for college, the death of my father which left me in charge of my family at age twenty-three, and working both a full time job and two part time ones to earn my advanced degree.
